Gourds are the fruit of a plant
similar to a squash or pumpkin. They grow on the ground on a
vine but are not edible. When mature the fruit becomes dry,
woody and hard. Gourds were used as containers and vessels
before man discovered the technology of ceramics.
Gourds may be grown in the backyard.
Because they germinate with difficulty, I start the seeds
very early in flats before transplanting to the ground. This
enhances their chances of producing usable fruit.
Embellishing is a vast opportunity
for the imagination and as diverse. Wood burning, dyeing,
carving, beading, weaving, collage, painting are beginning
possibilities. I prefer techniques that yield a primitive
appearance or evoke an antique appeal. Prices start at
$35.
