Wailakki-Yuki

Medicine/Toll Rock

This is a Wailakki Medicine Rock and Toll Rock. It is located about 25 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in Northern California not too far from a site known as Blue Rock, one of the most famous ancient indian battle-grounds in California. At the Blue Rock site they would fight until only the warriors of one tribe were left alive.

Toll Rock

The pertoglyph symbol for journey. This petroglyph is used by all, for journey. A snake petroglyph will look like a snake. This petroglyph was placed along a ridge on the rock indicating that the journey took place along a ridge. Many petroglyphs were carved into certian parts of a rock to let the contour of the rock enhance the meaning of the petroglyph. This is particularly true of sites showing where to find water, especially in arid regions.

Shaman-Medicine Rock

This is a Shaman Rock/Medicine Rock and although it's not within their known boundries, I belive it to belong to the "Yuki" from all indications. The heavy gouge marks, upper left, were probably made from pregnant women. The pregnant women believed that powder form a Medicine Rock, when taken orally, would make for a good birth or even pass the powers of the rock to their offspring. Many of the petroglyphs on this rock are thousands of years old and are disappearing due to nature, not man!
