The Martis chose very hard rock and did very fine work. To put their carvings in relation to other petroglyphs, you might say they used a fine point pen while the other petroglyphs were done with a marker pen! The martis carvings/etchings are fine and quite deep. Martis petroglyphs are amoung the oldest. They occupied the same lands as the Miadu, except thousands of years prior.
As you can see Martis petroglyphs differ a great deal from those petroglyphs you see in books and magazines. This petroglyph helped us locate the one below that looks like the sun. Because how it was used, and the way it worked for us, this was probably a petroglyph map of the area.
These petroglyphs are in Magnetite or Lodestone, a very hard dense rock (iron oxide). While most people have no idea what petroglyphs are supposed to represent, I don't think anyone will have a problem with this one. Yes, deer tracks. This site had many deer tracks trailing over this very large rock. This area, even today, is known as a migration route for deer.
Although this petroglyph may look like the sun it actually helped us find the remains of summer hunting/gathering camp that it was depicting. Again the circle representing something held (a camp in this case) with lines depicting going to or going away. The use of several lines ment many going to or away. The camp we found was a very large one for a summer camp and must have been a main staging point for other smaller camps. This camp is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet.
