What Petroglyphs Mean

Pertoglyph sign for a SpringThis petroglyph represents a "Spring". The circle with the dot is the petroglyph for something there or held there. The single line circle usually means a water hole or spring although it could mean a small camp or a place holding something. The wavey line usually represents water. If the wavey line was sharp "V's" instead it would mean journey/travel and would change the meaning of this petroglyph to probably mean, traveled from a small camp. Usually there are always more petroglyphs to help decipher the intended meaning. Many of the sites in Nevada, where the Spring petroglyph is present, there seems to be no water for miles but if you pay attention to what you are being told you will find water or at least where water once was. Some of the sites in Nevada that show water will take you to a place where you can clearly see that there was water there at one time but has since become dry. One petroglyph site in Nevada indicates water. The site is in the middle of nothing. Not a tree a blade of grass, nothing! Less than 300 feet from this site is a spring that gushes forth from the ground in a flow the size of a small creek. It flows about 60 feet and disappears into the ground from which it came. Without the petroglyph you would never know it was there unless you were just lucky enough to stumble upon it.
